BIRDS OF SASKATCHEWAN IN PICTURES

Once we set foot outside the door of our home, we enter the world of wildlife where birds are the most noticeable residents. The numerous species of birds and their varied songs soon make them a focus of our attention. For many, bird watching (birding) becomes a therapeutic outlet, something that was especially evident when COVID restrictions limited our travels to more local opportunities.

I grew up on a farm in east central Saskatchewan that was heavily treed and we only had to look out the window to connect with the local wildlife. I carried the need for this connection with me once I graduated to a more urban existence. Relaxation time then often meant hiking in the great outdoors with binoculars as part of the escape kit. I then found that my memory for detail was not the best and I graduated to cameras with telephoto lenses so I could capture details for closer inspection later.

We have many birds in Saskatchewan, but not a large number of species. Of the different species, many only stop for a short time to rest and refuel during their spring and fall migrations. Consequently, the windows of good opportunity to connect are somewhat limited. Given good light, cooperation from the birds, and a steady hand these chance photo opportunities can be recorded for future interest and enjoyment. As a bonus with pictures, there is always the prospect of a different or better shot to maintain one’s interest.
